If you like "A Whole New Mind" I think you will find Malcolm Gladwell's book "Blink" to be extremely interesting as well. It is like a psychological thriller to me.

The mind is such a beautiful and powerful tool!

Erika, Glad you found this article helpful. I had totally planned to write something else about networking and instead I found myself writing this one! I'm happy to hear that BNI is working out for you. I've attended a BNI group in Raleigh once last year. What's awesome is that there are so many groups available now for professional and business development. We have many opportunities to build relationships, learn from each other, and develop our business know-how and skills.

Karen, Absolutely! Networking is a NECESSITY for one's professional survival in this new "global economy". I was thinking a very similar thought the morning after I posted this article. I really didn't get "it", until having my own epiphanies within the last 3 years. And you're so right...it's important to connect with folks in your industry and at the same time having a larger view and a larger network gives you more flexibility and insight. Larger networks allow for more relationships where professionals can share information and be of service and support to each other. I wish you the very best as you continue on your career path and build fantastic new professional connections.

Latoya:

This article is my aha moment(Epiphany). I have been miffed about why I have not been able to acquire a position. I have applied to countless organizations with not one whisper from anyone. Going on 2 years and 4 days to be exact! I feel confident in my skill set and my education accomplishments. I, like you am severely handicapped at the new road to employment steps, with the top one being NETWORK, NETWORK, AND MORE NETWORK. I am now on my way to building and participating in connecting to people not only in my industry but the world at large. This is a MUST SURVIVAL TACTIC in the new employment environment. I, like a lot of people am resistant to change at certain levels but, when it is quantified I quickly and comfortably move where I need to be.

Once again thank you for the insights you provided.

Ed,

I hope that you've been enjoying these first weeks of 2011! I'm looking forward to the promise of this new year. Yes! Taking the time to "listen" has come into prominence for me within the past several months. To really take the time to listen takes courage, faith, patience, and many other attributes that are of great benefit on one's career and professional paths. So, thank you for spotlighting that point. I do feel that taking the time to listen and reflect and thereby "allowing" our purpose to find us will add an enhanced sense of well-being and ease in our lives.

Best regards,
Latoya

This article is so helpful and reminds me of my own career path. Learning—and being brave enough—to network is crucial. I joined a BNI group and it's changed the way I see my skills and business in general. Thanks for posting this, it's great encouragement!

Hi Latoya, Great post about purpose looking for YOU. This makes total sense. Imagine we all have a "true" self" as our "regular" self goes through this career-life journey with all its challenges. Of course our "false" self is that loud-mouthed naysayer that distracts and negates all that our "regular" self attempts. Fortunately our "true" self is always there to sustain us--but we need to make time to reflect and carefully listen. Perhaps it is this "true" self that is always there, beckoning us gently, whispering into our ears and heart to discover our purpose, follow our calling.

Most of us spend lots of energy seeking our purpose. That's not a bad thing. But it sure is useful to also take time to stop, listen, and reflect on those inner promptings, that "calling from within" that ALL people have access to. This reflective time helps us realize, as you and William Carver point out, our purpose IS truly always calling us. So then, how shall we respond, and what usually holds us back? Thanks and have a Blessed and Happy New Year EdC
